Have you taken the time over the Holidays to think about your goals for 2018? I’ve never been one for Resolutions because I never really thought that I could stick to something for an entire year. I guess my perfectionistic personality comes into play because you wouldn’t want to set a goal you possibly may not achieve, right?

This year is different! I’m excited about 2018 and I’m excited to set attainable goals that I can strive to achieve with my business, family, home, and spiritual life. For the first time ever, I have studied goal setting and what it will take to execute my plans.

 

The trick with Goal Setting is to break your big goals down into smaller goals so that you can achieved them. Have you heard of the acronym SMART for goal setting? Our goals need to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time Bound.

First you need to start with your overall VISION. What gets you up in the morning? What are you passionate about?  Why do you do what you do? Take some time, grab a notebook, and jot down anything that comes to your mind when you think about what you want for your life – write it all down and don’t overthink it!

Here are some ideas to start with:

-What makes you happy and fulfilled?
-What makes you feel accomplished?
-What are your core values?
-What are your passions?
-What do you believe to be your purpose?
-How do you envision your life?

You want to complete the Vision exercise because it will help you see themes in your life and areas where you can grow. It will also help you to see if your goals are in line with your vision.

Next, you can start to set your goals!  You want to be SPECIFIC with your goal. Since I am a health coach, let’s just roll with I the example of weight loss as a goal. But if I just say, “I want to lose weight”, then that is vague and it doesn’t allow for me to measure whether or not I am meeting my goal. You want to be more specific – like, “I want to lose 5 pounds.” This is also a MEASURABLE goal because it has a number attached to it and you will be able to track it!

The next question you need to ask yourself is, “Is this ATTAINABLE?”. One month with the right exercise and eating plan seems totally doable since most doctors and nutristionists say that losing 2 pounds a week is healthy for weight loss. I know that a lot of times when I really buckle down and focus on my nutrition I can drop 5 pounds faster than I realize.

You also need to ask yourself that although the goal is specific, measurable, and attainable, is it RELEVANT for you? Do you have time to devote to changing your nutrition and exercise (or lack thereof) habits? Do you really care about a number on the scale? Does losing that 5 pounds impact other areas of your life in a positive way? What will keep you staying strong throughout the month to achieve your goal? You want this goal to have IMPACT on your life and for it to really matter to you. For myself, when there have been times that 5 pounds off my frame would feel really nice, I was only successful when I was fed up with how I was feeling and needed my clothes to fit better. The number on the scale is not a driving force for me personally, but feeling good in my clothes and in my skin is! Ask yourself that once you achieve your goal, will you feel truly satisfied and fulfilled or would something else be more in line with your vision?

The next step is to give a time frame to your goal that you want to meet it by. You wouldn’t just want to say, “I want to lose 5 pounds” because it isn’t time sensitive and you wouldn’t have the urgency to do anything about it! So to make it TIME BOUND you add a time frame to complete the goal – one month seems like a reasonable amount of time to make that happen! So now your goal statement is, “I want to lose 5 pounds in one month.”

Think about other areas of your life that you want to see changes in – maybe tackling your closets, home organization, developing relationships with your children, or developing your Spiritual life.

Now you want to figure out how you are going to ATTAIN that goal and who is going to hold you ACCOUNTABLE!
